Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics Suffering From Economic Downturn

The Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver (Vanoc) has suffered the effects of the economic slowdown and has had to revise the program of activities in order to accomplish savings.

One choice proposed was to cancel the awards ceremony for the alpine events and Nordic sports in Whistler. Whisler politicians, along with Mayor Ken Melamed, are furious, especially as the region has invested millions of dollars to build a plaza and fabricate festivities in the evening at the awards ceremonies.

London 2012

If the medals ceremony were kept in Whistler, it would be the first time that the ceremonies would take place near the site of alpine events. More than half of the medals to be awarded at the Winter Games in Vancouver in 2010 are to be presented in Whistler. Vanoc was also planning to have the windup ceremonies of the 2010 Games in Whistler.

Vanoc for now refuses to criticism on the data revealed by the mayor of Whistler. A director of the organizing committee, Terry Wright, said that all the competition sites and activities for the presentation of the 2010 Games are subject to revision.

"Vanoc has to think that its task will be simplified and it will save some money, but the broad belief is that this event is very foremost to the community of Whistler," said Mayor Ken Melamed. "Vanoc has not submitted any other options", said Melamed. "They (Vanoc) wanted to know what we thought. "

Whistler plans to build a plaza for $ 13.6 million for the event. The plaza will also be used while the Paralympic Games as well. Vanoc seeks to sacrifice its budget by $ 1.6 billion.

The London Olympics in 2012 - A Quick Guide to the Main Venues

New Venues

The Olympic Park is the main area of development in London. Located in the north-east of London in an area that was previously underused: The Lea Valley, it will be host to the new-build venues. It contains the following 'Big Five ' structures:

London 2012

The Olympic Stadium - where the main athletic events will be held. The Aquatics Centre - where the swimming events will take placeThe Olympic settlement - where competitors will be staying during the eventThe Velodrome - where the cycling events are scheduledThe Ibc/Mpc - a media centre to house the international Tv crews, journalists and photographers.

All 'Big Five' venues are currently 'on track', though there is wide acknowledgement among development engineers that 2010 will be the 'toughest' year for development contractors, as the build cycle is now at its busiest phase.

Existing Venues

The following is a list of existing sites which will be modified to host a range of sporting events:

Earls Court in West London - normally stages exhibitions and A-list Pop/Rock star gigs, it will be hosting the Olympic Volleyball events.
ExCeL - is someone else large exhibition space, Located east of the Docklands and will home to a range of sports including: Boxing, Fencing, Judo, Table Tennis, Weightlifting, Powerlifting and other less familiar events (such as Taekwondo) for both able-bodied athletes and Paralympians.
Greenwich Park - south of the Docklands is hosting the Equestrian and contemporary Pentathlon events, with the cross country policy running over the parkland.
Horseguards Parade - it sounds unlikely, but true: the Beach Volleyball will be held on the space normally reserved for 'Trooping the Colour'. The ball could bounce over into the Prime Minister's organery from there.
The Dome - in North Greenwich, will host the Basketball and artistic gymnastics. The ill-fated Millennium Dome has been successfully hosting gigs and basketball events for years now and has turned its 'White Elephant' status colse to completely, normally selling out in minutes.
The Royal Artillery Barracks - a spectacular setting for the shooting events in Woolwich, South-east London. Built in 1776, the structure are steeped in military history. Arsenal football club began nearby, using their former name: 'The Woolwich Arsenal'.
Wembley Stadium - will host the football. Recently rebuilt at eye-watering expense, this venue is the former home of English football.
Wimbledon - unsurprisingly, will host the tennis competition.

In expanding Hyde Park and Regent's Park will host the Triathlon and Cycling events, respectively.

The main stadium roof was successfully raised on the 15th December 2009, prompting Lord Coe (London 2012 Committee Chair) and Olympics Minister, Tessa Jowell to confirm their confidence in building contractors hitting their key targets. It appears that the 2012 Olympic preparations are on agenda and confidence is high, despite the global recession, that the Games will accomplish the high standards promised, when London won the bid in July 2005.

Should Olympic Athletes Wear Bikinis?

Many folks watching the Beijing Olympics are wondering who picks out the outfits and sportswear for the assorted teams competing. For instance, the girls U.S. Volleyball team wear bikinis for the beach volleyball.  This perhaps makes sense since they are competing in beach volleyball on the sand. However, if you watch closely you can see that the athletes are permanently adjusting their bikinis during the competition in the middle of plays.

It seems that athletes should wear the most approved attire that allows them the maximum benefits of their performance. Now then, if the beach volleyball players are permanently adjusting their bikinis because they are not kept in place during play then perhaps these are not the best outfits to wear for peak operation to win gold medals. Some are asking is this exploitation of women or are the bikinis the very best sports ware for the athletes.

If one is to look at this moot seriously, it is swiftly noted that the bikinis are not the best sportswear for these players and in fact, they get in the way of their performance. Thus, in all the commercialization that goes on with the Olympics perhaps these outfits should be modified with a winning in mind. It makes sense for the sprinters and other type athletes to wear bikinis, if appropriate. However when it's not approved other attire should be used in competition.

The moot gets quite heated when you throw in a itsybitsy religious fanaticism into the picture. If the bikinis are not the allowable attire for the beach volleyball competition then more approved sportswear must be considered. Regardless, of how anything feels about the issue of half naked girls playing volley ball in the Olympics, the real concern is that it is being done for the right reasons, if not, then it's not a good thing.

London 2012 News - 2012 Olympic Tickets

News on London 2012 tickets

Well if you think you stand a good opportunity of getting a label for the 2012 Olympics you maybe in luck, but it is extremely likely that the opportunity and end ceremonies will already be virtually sold out.

London 2012

How can this be I hear you say when tickets do not go on sale until an estimated date of Mid-2012. Well that is because as ever all of the major Olympic sponsors (you know the big names) get given immense amounts of 'options' to buy tickets for the opportunity and end games. I believe this is decided at Ioc level and not by the organisers of London 2012. It is believed this will also apply to other excellent events such as 100m, 1500m finals as an example.

This means that tickets for both the opportunity and end of the games will be at a premium. easily tickets are already being offered on the internet for the opportunity of London 2012 at £3,000 per person. But do not be tempted as the label touting laws may well be changed in the middle of now and 2012, meaning that even if you fetch a seat at £3,000 you could find it non-transferable and hence worthless.

The other perfectly legal scam is that you could be sold a label for £3,000 and then be told at the last petite that they it is not available. When you ask for your money back it is returned but not the full £3,000, as the business that sold you the label is only obliged to return you the face value money of the ticket, estimated £75-100. Thus there are those out there who will make a killing from selling London 2012 tickets that they never have any intention of delivering.
