Durban Olympics 2020 - The Other Cities That Are Bidding To Host The Olympic Games in 2020

Durban Olympics 2020 - The other cities that are bidding to host the Summer Olympics 2020.

Durban is now the only city in South Africa that will formally bid to host to the Summer Olympic Games in 2020 after Johannesburg, Cape Town and Port Elizabeth failed to submit their application to SASCOC. On September 7th 2010, SASCOC announced that it considered South Africa's 2020 Olympic bid finalised with Durban as the host city, and now it was up to the South African government to ensure that Durban's Olympic bid for the 2020 Olympic Games goes ahead. This should be no problem as Jacob Zuma, the President of South Africa, is a firm supporter of Durban as the host city and after the huge success of the 2010 World Cup Football, Durban proved it can host a major international sporting event with no problems.

Olympics 2012

Durban is up against some big competition to host the 2020 Olympic Games, but the climate of the city during June / July and the excellent sports venues are a huge advantage for Durban. The fact that the IOC is having it's conference there in 2011 is a huge bonus and will allow the decision makers to see first hand that Durban would be the perfect choice as the host city of the Olympic Games in 2020.

The other cities that are planning on bidding are:

Rabat, Morocco
Busan, South Korea
Doha, Qatar
Dubai, United Arab Emirates
Tokyo, Japan
Hiroshima, Japan
Budapest, Hungary
Istanbul, Turkey
Rome, Italy
Madrid, Spain
Lisbon, Portugal
Saint Petersburg, Russia
Bucharest, Romania
Guadalajara, Mexico
Monterrey, Mexico
Toronto, Canada
Brisbane, Australia.

Working in Durban's favour to host the 2020 Olympic Games is that the IOC has expressed the desire to have the games in a developing country, and the fact that the Olympics has never been on African soil will also mean that Durban will be the favourite city, as it's only other competitor will be Rabat in Morocco.

Archery at the Olympics

Not many of us know much about archery competition, and probably less about archery competition in the Olympics. With the 2008 Olympic Summer Games to be held soon in China, maybe this short report will help to make watching archery more enjoyable.

The Olympic games in 1900 Paris was the first appearance of archery. 7 events in varying distances were contested. The next Olympics in 1904 St. Louis had 5 archery events but no athletes from outside the United States competed. At the 1908 Summer Olympics, there were 3 archery events. Archery was not featured at the 1912 Summer Olympics but reappeared in the 1920 Summer Olympics.

London Olympic

Between 1920 and 1972, archery was not contested at the Olympic games. The archery competition at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich consisted of two events - men's personel and women's individual. This form of competition was held until the 1988 Summer Olympics, when team competition was added. Beginning at the 1992 Summer Olympics head-to-head matches were adopted, and has been used ever since.

1972 saw the Beginning of the modern archery competition at the Olympic Games. The events began to use standardized forms and many nations competed. Qualification spots in archery are allotted to National Olympic Committees rather than to personel athletes.

There were four ways for Nocs to earn berths in Olympic archery. Each Noc is allowed to enter three archers of each gender. For each gender, the host nation is guaranteed three spots. The most new World Target Competition's top 8 teams (besides the host nation) each receive three spots, and the 19 top ranked archers after the team qualifiers are removed also earn spots for their country. 15 of the remaining 18 spots are divided equally among the five Olympic continents for funds in continental tournaments. The last three spots in each gender are thought about by invitation.

Each National Olympic Committee that receives three places for personel archers (i.e., the host nation, the top 8 teams at the World Target Competition, and any other nation that is able to take 3 of the remaining 37 places) is able to have its three archers compete as a team in the team competition.

Olympic archery consists of four medal events: men's individual, women's individual, men's team, and women's team. In all four events, the length from the archer to the target is 70 meters.

In the personel competitions, 64 archers compete. The competition begins with the ranking round. Each archer shoots 72 arrows. They are then ranked by score to rule their seeding for the single-elimination bracket. After this, final rankings for each archer is thought about by the archer's score in the round in which the archer was defeated, with the archers defeated in the first round being ranked 33rd straight through 64th.

The first elimination round pits the first ranked archer against the sixty-fourth, the second against the sixty-third, and so on. In this match as well as the second and third, the archers shoot simultaneously 18 arrows. The archer with the higher score after 18 arrows moves on to the next round while the loser is eliminated.

After three elimination rounds, there are 8 archers remaining. The remaining three rounds (quarterfinals, semifinals, and medal matches) are referred to as the finals rounds. They consist of each archer firing 12 arrows. The two archers in the match alternate instead of firing their arrows simultaneously as in the first three rounds. The losers of the quarterfinals are eliminated, while the losers of the semifinals play each other to rule the bronze medal and fourth place. The two archers who are undefeated straight through the semifinals face each other in the gold medal match, with the winner taking the gold medal while the loser receives the silver medal.

Each country that has three archers in the personel competition also gets to compete as a team. The same three archers from the personel competition must compete as the country's team. Their scores in the personel ranking round are added to rule the team's ranking round score.

The first team round is the round of 16, with the top ranked teams typically getting a bye in the first round. Matches consist of each team firing 27 arrows with each archer on the team firing 3 arrows. Advancement and medals are thought about in the same manner as the personel competition.

Should Kitesurfing Be Included At The 2016 Olympic Games?

In 2009 the International Olympic Committee at its Copenhagen argument declared that "the Olympics movement must strive to expand its remit and to growth its sway with young habitancy across the world." I for one cannot think of a better way of achieving this goal than by including Kitesurfing at the 2016 Olympic Games. There is no other sailing class in the world (and few sports) that have such a high division of participants under 30. Added to the fact that kitesurfing is currently the hot thing in water sports and its inclusion in the Olympics would bring a huge element of 'cool' to the sailing class which is currently seen as a boring and exclusive, for old farts and Hooray Henry's only.

Windsurfing in the Olympics currently struggles due to the fact that the sailing events are held in venues where light winds are the preference as dinghy's etc only for real need a force 2 - 3 for optimum competition. Kitesurfing would not suffer from this drawback as contemporary kitesurfing tool means that 6 knots is sufficient to not only ride but to ride upwind. It also offers a huge draw to the worlds media, with 100's of brightly coloured kites jostling right next to the beach not to mention some truly spectacular wipe outs and all in all you have an event that could capture the imagination of every person from 6 to 60 years old.

London 2012

Richard Branson an legal Kitesurfing Olympic Ambassador and keen kitesurfer is quoted as saying,

"Kiteboarding is a fun and spectacular sport that I think would make a tremendously piquant increasing to the Olympic Games"

The 2016 Olympics will be held in Rio de Janeiro with the Olympic sailing Regatta having chosen Copacabana beach as its primary location. I for one cannot fantasize a better location to showcase kitesurfing and its status as a new Olympic Sport.

So whats your take? Should Kitesurfing be allowed into the Olympics?
